Rowley Police Respond to Motor Vehicle Crash Involving Tractor Trailer

ROWLEY — Chief Scott A. Dumas reports that the Rowley Police Department is investigating after a motor vehicle crashed into a tractor trailer this morning, sending the driver and her infant to the hospital.

At 10:45 a.m., Rowley Police received a report of a two-vehicle crash on Haverhill Street (Route 133), between Route 1 and Main Street (Route 1A).

A preliminary on scene investigation indicates that a 40-year-old woman from Haverhill was traveling west in a 2016 Kia Sportage on Haverhill Street when she crossed the double yellow line and struck a tractor trailer that was heading east. The woman’s car then came to rest against a tree.

Rowley firefighters used hydraulic rescue tools to extricate the woman from her vehicle. She was transported to an area hospital with injuries that are believed to be serious. Her infant, who was in the car at the time of the crash, was also transported to an area hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.

The driver of the tractor trailer, a 51-year-old man from New Bedford, was not injured.

Both vehicles sustained substantial damage and were towed from the scene.

Following the crash, Haverhill Street, from Main Street to Route 1, was closed in both directions for several hours. The road re-opened at 1:30 p.m.

Ipswich Police and Fire, along with the Newbury Fire Department, responded to the scene for mutual aid. The Massachusetts State Police’s truck team also responded to evaluate the tractor trailer.

The crash remains under investigation by the Rowley Police Department and the Massachusetts State Police.
