Gloucester Firefighters Rescue Three Fishermen After Boat Runs Aground
GLOUCESTER — Chief Eric Smith reports that the Gloucester Fire Department rescued three fishermen after their vessel ran aground early this morning.
At approximately 5:10 a.m., the Gloucester Fire Department was informed by Gloucester Police that a vessel was in distress off Eastern Point, and that the occupants were attempting to get to shore on their own.
Upon arrival, firefighters determined the vessel had come to rest completely ashore on the rocks approximately 150 yards east of Eastern Point Lighthouse. After working their way across the rocks, responding firefighters encountered the vessel and its crew, all of whom were still aboard and uninjured.
The vessel, a 47-foot lobster boat, was immovable and was leaking fuel from a vent. It is believed to have spilled approximately five gallons of fuel prior to the leak being plugged. The U.S. Coast Guard also assisted at the scene.
The owner of the boat will work with a salvage company to remove the vessel from the rocks.
