Newburyport Police to Collect Donations for Hurricane Irma Victims
NEWBURYPORT — City Marshal Mark Murray reports that the Newburyport Police Department will be collecting badly needed supplies and donations to support people displaced or otherwise affected by Hurricane Irma.
The supply drive is being organized to support Essex County Sheriff Kevin F. Coppinger’s countywide effort to collect nonperishable items to send to Florida. Massachusetts sheriffs recently received a memo from the Florida Sheriffs Association detailing the need for items like clean new clothes, new pillows, backpacks, bottles of water, bug spray, baby wipes and sunscreen.
A complete list of the requested items from the Florida Sheriffs Association can be found here.
The Newburyport Police trailer will be parked in front of the police station from Friday, Sept. 29 through Wednesday, Oct. 4 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Cash is not being requested and will not be accepted.
Items received will be transported to the Essex County Sheriff’s Department offices in Middleton, which will arrange for their delivery to Florida.
“In times of crisis and disaster, Americans have an uncanny knack for coming together and helping each other out,” Marshal Murray said. “I encourage all of our residents and business owners to review the list of items needed. Odds are, some of these are lying around in cabinets and drawers. Please support this effort for those affected most by this brutal hurricane season.”
