Newport Police to Honor Fallen Officer On 100th Anniversary of His Death
NEWPORT — Chief Seth DiSanto reports that the Newport Police Department and U.S. Customs and Border Patrol will come together to honor the late Officer Joseph Monague on the 100th anniversary of his death in the line of duty.

WHAT
Officer Monague, Newport’s first uniformed officer, was shot and killed on Sept. 26, 1917, while assisting federal officials who were attempting to apprehend a suspect on Main Street.
Members of the public and media are invited to attend the ceremony, which will last approximately one hour, and will feature remarks from Chief DiSanto, a representative from Border Patrol and a member of Officer Monague’s family.
“It is very important for us to mark this somber anniversary and pay our respects to Officer Monague for his service and sacrifice,” Chief DiSanto said. “We are also honored that descendants of his will be able to join us and pay tribute to his legacy.”
