Blackstone Police Arrest Man Who Barricaded Himself Inside of Residence
BLACKSTONE — Police Chief Ross A. Atstupenas reports that the Blackstone Police Department has arrested a man on several charges after he barricaded himself inside a residence yesterday.
EDWARD CURTIS CHANDLER, AGE 71, OF BLACKSTONE, is charged with:
- Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (Handgun, Two Counts)
- Possession of a Firearm without a License (Four Counts)
- Possession of Ammunition without an FID Card
- Possession of a Class C Substance
At approximately, 7:18 p.m., Blackstone Police responded to a residence on Gaskill Street for a well-being check on CHANDLER. As police approached the residence, CHANDLER displayed a handgun. Officers retreated to a safe position and called for additional units, and CHANDLER shut the door and barricaded himself inside the residence.
The Central Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council (CEMLEC) SWAT Team, Woonsocket Police, and the Worcester County Sheriff’s Office Crisis Negotiation Team and command vehicle responded to the scene for assistance. After several hours, the CEMLEC SWAT team was able to safely enter CHANDLER’S residence and he was taken into custody without incident at approximately 12:00 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 28.
After searching CHANDLER’S residence, police located multiple weapons and various types of ammunition. CHANDLER was transported to a local hospital where he is currently being held for evaluation pending arraignment.
No injuries were reported as a result of this incident.
“This was a tense situation and I commend our officers for falling back on their training to ensure that the scene remained as safe as possible throughout this incident,” Chief Atstupenas said. “I would like thank all agencies involved for their assistance in bringing this situation to a peaceful end.”
This incident remains under active investigation by the Blackstone Police Department.
These are allegations. All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty.
