Missing Littleton Bull on the Run for Nearly a Week Put Down
LITTLETON — Police Chief Matthew J. King reports that the Littleton bull that was missing for nearly a week was put down this evening.
The bull, which had been reported missing from the Farmer’s Livestock Auction and Market Exchange auction on Aug. 15, had been seen in surrounding communities like Groton and Ayer over the last week, but was not caught.
At approximately 5:30 p.m., Littleton Police received a report that the bull had been spotted standing in the middle of the Great Road by Janes Drive. The night prior, the bull was also on Great Road, and a driver reported narrowly avoiding a collision. If a motor vehicle were to strike the animal, it could cause serious injuries to the occupants.
Upon arrival, a Littleton Police Sergeant located the bull behind 25 Ernies Drive and contacted the owner. However, when the bull started to head back toward Great Road, the Sergeant, fearing for the safety of drivers, fired two shots at the bull.
The owner of the bull arrived on scene shortly thereafter. Out of concern for public safety, the owner made the difficult decision to put down the bull. He fired another shot that proved to be fatal.
“This decision did not come lightly,” Chief King said. “Littleton Police and the bull’s owner acted out of concern for people in the neighborhood and drivers in the area.”
