Newport Police Arrest Home Invasion Suspect
NEWPORT — Chief Seth DiSanto reports that the Newport Police Department arrested a man Tuesday in connection with a home invasion that occurred last week on Fernwood Circle.
NATHAN CHENEY, AGE 20, OF NEWPORT, was arrested and charged with Unlawful Trespass.
On Thursday, July 27, at approximately 11:34 a.m., officers were dispatched to a home on Fernwood Circle for a reported break-in. Upon arrival, officers learned that a man, later identified as CHENEY, entered the home through an open bathroom window and allegedly claimed he was hiding from someone when confronted by the resident, who was home at the time. CHENEY fled the home shortly after being confronted by the resident.
In an effort to gather more information about the incident and potentially identify CHENEY, the Newport Police Department put out a press release to the public asking for assistance.
Shortly after it was issued, a vigilant neighbor who had seen the release recalled seeing CHENEY in the Fernwood Circle area around the time of the home invasion and contacted police.
Another neighbor who read the press release also called police and said she’d seen CHENEY running down the street around the time of the reported home invasion.
Based on the information provided by witnesses, Newport Police officers identified CHENEY as the suspect involved in the home invasion and placed him under arrest at his home.
“I am proud of the work of all of the officers involved in this investigation,” Chief DiSanto said. “I am also grateful to the members of the public who came forward with information that was essential in helping us capture the suspect.”
CHENEY was held on $10,000 cash bail pending his arraignment.
