Gloucester Police to Receive Donated BMW i3 Vehicles

GLOUCESTER — Mayor Sefatia Romeo Theken and Interim Chief John McCarthy are pleased to announce that the Gloucester Police Department has partnered with the Lyon-Waugh Auto Group of Peabody, which will donate two BMW i3 electric vehicles to the department.

WHO

  • Mayor Sefatia Romeo Theken
  • The Gloucester Police Department
  • Lyon-Waugh Auto Group

WHEN

Wednesday, July 26, 6:30 p.m.

WHERE

Cape Ann’s Marina Resort

WHAT

Lyon-Waugh Auto Group and BMW of Peabody will donate two all-electric BMW i3 vehicles to the Gloucester Police Department, which will use them to enhance its presence throughout the community and at the city’s schools.

“We truly appreciate the support of Lyon-Waugh and BMW of Peabody,” Mayor Romeo Theken said. “These vehicles will be a great way for the department to connect with the community in a new and unique way.”

One of the vehicles will be assigned to the department’s school resource officer, replacing his 10-year-old cruiser and helping the department work toward having a more energy-efficient fleet of cruisers.

“Electric vehicles are the way of the future, and we are excited to be able to add two to our fleet,” Interim Chief McCarthy said. “These vehicles will be a valuable resource for us and we are grateful to Lyon-Waugh Auto Group and BMW of Peabody for their generosity.”

The cars will be uniquely branded, distinguishing them from the department’s other cruisers and connecting them to the Gloucester Police’s Kops-N-Kids program, which dispatches officers to schools to meet and spend time with students.

“We’re excited because it gives the police a vehicle that lends itself well to connecting directly with the community,” Lyon-Waugh Auto Group Marketing Director Cidalia Schwartz said.

“We take tremendous pride in being able to support our neighboring communities,” Warren Waugh said. “We hope that these vehicles help satisfy a need for the Gloucester Police and better enable them to do their jobs.”

Once delivered, the vehicles will be a daily fixture at Gloucester’s schools and will also be on display at more than 100 city-sponsored events that occur annually.
