Newport Police Arrest Man for Assault and Robbery
NEWPORT — Chief Seth C. DiSanto reports that the Newport Police Department arrested a man for Assault and Robbery today.
JACOB TOURANGEAU, AGE 33, OF NEWPORT CITY, is charged with Assault and Robbery.
On Friday, July 14 at approximately 2:56 p.m., Newport Police received a report that a male subject, later identified as TOURANGEAU, entered the Rite Aid Pharmacy, located at 59 Waterfront Plaza, and handed the clerk a note demanding morphine or he would hurt customers.
The clerk gave TOURANGEAU a bottle of bills and he fled the store.
Police located a man matching TOURANGEAU’S description on the boardwalk in Newport at approximately 3:09 p.m. When police approached TOURANGEAU, he took off running toward Main Street.
Witnesses in the area told police they saw a man matching TOURANGEAU’S description near the State Building. After searching the area surrounding and inside the State Building, Newport Police located TOURANGEAU inside of a bathroom stall in the men’s bathroom on the first floor of the building.
Just 25 minutes after the initial call came in, TOURANGEAU was taken into custody and transported to North Country Hospital for evaluation, where he is being held overnight. He will be transported to the Northern State Correctional Center where he will be held on charges from the Newport Police Department and escape status from probabtion and parole, pending his arraignment in Orleans County Criminal Court.
