Chelmsford Police Arrest Rhode Island Man Wanted in Vermont after Pursuit from New Hampshire into Massachusetts
CHELMSFORD — Police Chief James M. Spinney reports that the Chelmsford Police Department arrested a fugitive from justice after a pursuit that involved multiple agencies.
GREGORY COFFEY, AGE 32, OF WARWICK, R.I. was arrested after a police pursuit that began in New Hampshire and crossed into Massachusetts before ending in Chelmsford.
At 2:45 a.m. Sunday, the Chelmsford Police Department was notified about a motor vehicle pursuit involving the New Hampshire State Police of a vehicle allegedly driven by an armed and wanted fugitive who may be intoxicated. The pursuit crossed the state border and was joined by Tyngsborough Police near Middlesex Road in that community.
Chelmsford Police units positioned themselves on Tyngsborough Road to monitor the pursuit and assist if necessary. The suspect’s vehicle eventually became disabled near Vinal Square in Chelmsford.
When officers found COFFEY, he was suffering from what were determined to be self-inflicted lacerations, and an ambulance was requested.
COFFEY was transported to a Boston hospital for treatment for serious injuries.
COFFEY was wanted in connection with a domestic violence incident in Hartford, Vt. and has been charged with:
- Being a Fugitive from Justice (Three Counts — Vermont, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island)
- Receiving a Stolen Motor Vehicle
- Operating Recklessly to Endanger
- Failure to Stop for Police
- Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle
- Giving a False Name to Police
COFFEY is under guard and will held pending treatment and arraignment.
These are allegations. All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty.
