Bedford Police Recover Card Skimming Device from Bank ATM
BEDFORD — Chief John Bryfonski reports that the Bedford Police Department recovered a skimming device today from a bank ATM. The Police Department is alerting residents and visitors who may have used the ATM recently to check their bank statements.
Officers responded to the Service Credit Union on Colby Court at approximately 10:15 a.m., following a report that a bank card skimming device had been discovered on a drive-thru ATM.
Officers investigated and determined that the skimming device, which transmits cardholder data electronically to a remote location, was placed inside the ATM at approximately 3:19 a.m., Thursday, May 18, based on some surveillance footage that showed the camera being covered up by the suspect.
“These devices allow criminals to steal unsuspecting victims’ personal banking information,” Chief Bryfonski said. “I commend the bank employees and officers who recovered this device before it had been installed for long, but I encourage anyone who may have used this ATM to keep a close eye on their bank accounts going forward.”
No suspects have been identified at this time, and the incident is under investigation.
The Bedford Police Department urges anyone who may have used this ATM to check their bank statements for unauthorized withdrawals and to contact police at 603-472-5113 if they have been victimized.
