Newport Police Department Pays Tribute to its Fallen Officer During National Police Week
NEWPORT, Vt. — Chief Seth DiSanto and the Newport Police Department, in commemoration of Peace Officers’ Memorial Day and National Police Week, wish to pay tribute to the late Officer Joseph Manogue, who was killed in the line of duty nearly 100 years ago.
Officer Manogue was Newport’s first uniformed police officer, and remains the only officer in the department’s history to be killed while serving the community.
The Newport Police Department also expresses its gratitude to Poulin Grain, which is flying the Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Flag in honor of National Police Week, which lasts through Friday.
Officer Manogue lost his life on Sept. 26, 1917, when he was shot and killed while assisting federal officials at the Newport House on Main Street. After a man had been taken into custody, he pulled a gun from his pants and fired five shots, mortally wounding Officer Manogue.
“Police Week is an important reminder of the sacrifice made by so many law enforcement officers, and it is essential that we continue to recognize Officer Manogue for his bravery and sacrifice on behalf of the people of Newport as the 100th anniversary of his death approaches, ” Chief DiSanto said. “Time will never diminish his important place in the history of our city and our department.”
Since his death, Officer Manogue’s name has been etched on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial, and he has earned the Military Order of the Purple Heart’s National Law Enforcement Distinguished Service Award.
National Peace Officers’ Memorial Day and National Police Week were created by order of President John F. Kennedy in 1962, and now attracts as many as 40,000 survivors, law enforcement personnel and supporters to Washington, D.C. each year.
