Greater Lawrence Technical School Students Place in SkillsUSA Competition
ANDOVER — Superintendent John Lavoie is pleased to announce that several Greater Lawrence Technical School students competed in the SkillsUSA state conference, with four earning medals.
On April 28-29, students traveled to Marlborough for the second round of the SkillsUSA Championships, which features a series of competitive events designed to showcase the best career and technical education students in the nation.
Previously, on March 16, 143 GLTS students competed in the district level competition, where seven won medals and 22 were eligible to move on to the state competition.
During the state competition, students in grades 10-12 were broken into their trades of choice to compete in solo challenges that tested their skills and abilities. Freshmen competitions showcased what students completed during their exploratory year, focusing on a skill they learned with an accompanying commentary speech about how they selected their career area.
GLTS students placed as follows in the state competition:
Gold Medal Winners:
Senior Nora Knox, of Methuen, (Carpentry): Job Interview
Freshman Ahlyia Leclerc, of Methuen, (Biotechnology): Freshmen Exploratory Demonstration
Silver Medal Winners:
Junior Juana Lopez, of North Andover,: Restaurant Service. Superintendent Lavoie would also like to offer a special congratulations to Lopez, who received a perfect score on her trade test in Restaurant Service during the district level competition in March.
Junior Ivana Perez, of Lawrence,: Freshmen Career Choice Commentary
Knox and Leclerc will now move on to the national competition in Louisville, Ky. on June 19-24.
The remaining students who participated in the competition will learn their scores later this month.
“The SkillsUSA competition gives our students the opportunity to showcase their abilities in their trade of choice,” Superintendent Lavoie said. “Every year, students look forward to this competition and I’m extremely proud of everyone who participated at the district and state level. Congratulations to Nora and Ahlyia! We wish them good luck as they head to nationals.”
