Hull High School Student Completes Successful Internship With Local Contracting Company
HULL — Principal Michael Devine is pleased to announce that Hull High School junior David Gardiner presented to School Committee members this week on his spring internship.
Gardiner shared his experience working at SAM Builders, an independent contractor based in Hull, during a School Committee meeting on April 24.
Beginning in January, Gardiner left the classroom for two periods each day during the school week and headed to Nantasket Avenue in Hull to help renovate a home.
Eager to pursue a career in plumbing or carpentry, Gardiner hoped to immediately jump into building, but under the leadership of SAM Builders owner Steve McDowell, quickly learned that there are many intricacies to every project.
“There was grunt work to be done like hauling a pile of two-by-fours up to the second floor of the home, sweeping up the job site, and bringing scrap wood and trash to the dumpster,” Gardiner explained at the meeting.
Months later, after proving himself, Gardiner was given the responsibility of assisting with the layout and construction of interior walls, cutting wooden boards to size for the deck and many other crucial tasks.
In its seventh year, the Hull High School internship program allows students to get real-life experience with local businesses in a field that interests them. Students work with Community Outreach Coordinator Jim Quatromoni and their individual guidance counselors to find an employer that will help further their learning and career goals after graduation.
“For me, this internship has not just been for credit, but an opportunity to get hands on experience working in the trade and the ability to use this experience to make decisions for my life after high school,” Gardiner said.
Throughout the 2016/2017 school year, 37 high school students obtained internships in a variety of fields, from the Hull Fire Department and the U.S. Coast Guard to working on website development and at an auto body shop.
“Our internship program offers students a unique opportunity to explore a subject or field of interest with employers that are succeeding in their industry,” Principal Devine said. “Every year we see students excel in a number of different roles and develop a more clear path for their future, whether it’s advancing their studies at a college or university, or in a trade they plan to pursue upon graduation.”
