Topsfield Fire Department to Host Citizens Fire Academy
TOPSFIELD – Interim Chief Richard Harris is pleased to announce that the Topsfield Fire Department will host its first Citizens Fire Academy next month.
The course will begin on April 4 and will run Tuesday evenings at the Topsfield Fire Department, from 6-9 p.m., until May 9. The class will not meet on May 2 during Town Meeting.
Participants will learn about the duties and services the fire department fulfills on a daily basis. Classes will be taught by Topsfield firefighters and topics will include:
- History of fire services
- Apparatus
- Tool and equipment familiarization
- Use of protective equipment
- Vehicle extrication including use of Jaws of Life
- CPR training and basic first aid
- Fire prevention
- Fire extinguisher use
- Hazardous materials overview
- Radio use
- Tour of the Essex County Regional Emergency Communications Center
The academy is free and open to residents 18 years old and above. Applications are available at the Topsfield Fire Department, 27 High St., or on the fire department website, on the resources and downloadable forms page.
Applications must be submitted at the fire department by Friday, March 31. Class size is limited to 20 participants on a first-come, first-served basis.
“We’re extremely excited to be able to offer this program to our residents,” Chief Harris said. “This is a unique opportunity for the community to get a first-hand look at the inner workings of the fire department, and we encourage all who are interested to apply.”
