Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School Students Participate in MATHCOUNTS Competition
MELROSE– Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School (MVMMS) Principal Brent Conway is pleased to announce that 10 students participated in the MATHCOUNTS competition earlier this month.
The competition is organized by The MATHCOUNTS Foundation — a nonprofit organization that provides engaging math programs to U.S. middle school students of all ability levels to build confidence and excite participants about the subject and problem solving.
Melrose Public Schools hosted a local chapter competition for the sixth time on Saturday, Feb. 4. Approximately 250 students from 26 schools in the surrounding area participated. The top 10 scoring schools from the chapter competition moved onto the state championship.
Eighth graders Thomas Broduer, Nat Michaels, Thomas Bergin, Matthew Frawley, Andrea Mortimer, Louis Chen and Jack O’Hara, along with seventh graders Eric Sanford, John Lehman and Lillian Cancelarich were selected to join the competition after completing an entrance exam with Math Team Coach Kasey Fritz.
During the four rounds of the event — the sprint, target, team and countdown — participants answered questions on a variety of math topics taught at the high school level.
Broduer, Michaels, Bergin and Sanford also competed in the team round, and placed 13th out of 26.
“I’d like to congratulate the students who participated in the MATHCOUNTS Competition,” Principal Conway said. “Mathematics is at the forefront of our curriculum and we’re always excited when students take the initiative to further their knowledge and problem solving abilities.”
