Methuen Police to Offer Free Rides to Residents on New Year’s Eve
METHUEN — Mayor Stephen Zanni and Chief Joseph E. Solomon announce that the Methuen Police Department will be offering free rides home to residents on New Year’s Eve as part of its “Arrive Alive…Let the Methuen Police Drive” initiative.
To ensure community members arrive at their residence safely after holiday celebrations, Methuen police will provide a lift home to those who have been drinking. The initiative runs from 8 p.m. to a 4 a.m. on Dec. 31.
Additionally, the department will be running extra patrols on New Year’s Eve to vigilantly monitor for drunken drivers.
“We are offering this service to help keep the public safe,” Mayor Zanni said. “Please, if you haven’t already arranged for a ride home and have been drinking on New Year’s Eve, call the police department and they will get you home safely.”
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, every two minutes a person is injured in a drunk driving crash.
“You should never get behind the wheel if you’ve been drinking,” Chief Solomon said. “Methuen police officers are happy to assist any person who is celebrating in town and needs help getting home. Please, do not hesitate to reach out to us. This could save your life and others.”
Anyone who needs a ride home on New Year’s Eve should call the Methuen Police Department at 978-983-8698 to make arrangements.
