Saugus Police Department Responds to Motor Vehicle Crash Involving Child
SAUGUS — Chief Domenic DiMella reports that the Saugus Police Department responded to a motor vehicle crash last night that injured a child.
On Oct. 21, at approximately 7:30 p.m., police received a report that a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle in the area of 166 Walnut Street.
Upon arrival, officers learned that a 9-year-old Saugus boy and two other youths were crossing Walnut Street from the Kohl’s plaza to get to Walgreens.
At the same time, a 29-year-old Saugus man, driving a 2014 Nissan Rogue, was traveling west on Walnut Street, and was turning right into Walgreens, when he struck the Saugus boy, dragging him approximately 50 feet.
The Saugus boy was taken to a Boston hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life threatening, and is currently in stable condition. The other two children involved were not injured.
Following an investigation, police learned that the driver had a green light when he was making the right turn, and that weather conditions and darkness may have played a factor in the crash. The driver will not be charged.
