Five Arlington Police Officers Graduate from MBTA Transit Police Academy
Arlington — Chief Frederick Ryan is pleased to announce that five news officers from the Arlington Police Department graduated from the MBTA Transit Police Academy yesterday.
Officers Joseph Canniff, Tenzing Dundutsang, Thomas Guanci, Daniel Styffe, and Salena Zona were recognized for their accomplishments during a ceremony at the Great Hall in Faneuil Hall on Sept. 21.
Following their graduation, the officers were sworn in this morning at the Arlington Town Hall.
“Congratulations to our five new officers for finishing the MBTA Transit Academy,” Chief Ryan said. “Their dedication, diligence and hard work throughout the academy will be invaluable as they begin their new roles as Arlington Police Officers.”
The five new recruits are all Arlington residents. They attended the 37th Municipal Police Officers Class at the MBTA Police Academy in Quincy, beginning on March 14.
The rigorous 27-week program featured classroom hours where attendees learned about criminal and constitutional law, domestic violence, use of force, motor vehicle law as well as many other pertinent topics. The officers also spent time at the shooting range and Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (defensive driving) course.
The academy is only the first part of the new officers’ training, as they will now participate in the Arlington Police Department’s Police Officer 12-week field training program. Recruits will concentrate on Arlington-specific issues, with a heavy focus on community policing, restorative justice, procedural justice, and fair and impartial policing, four programs that are core components of the Arlington Police Department’s progressive public safety philosophy.
Officer Zona distinguished herself in the physical training section of the curriculum, setting the all-time MBTA Police Academy record for push-ups by a female recruit, with 78 in a single minute. The prior record stood at 75 push-ups in a minute.
