Gloucester Fire Department Battles Two-Alarm Junkyard Fire

GLOUCESTER — Chief Eric Smith reports that the Gloucester Fire Department is battling a two-alarm fire at the Bayview Auto Recycling and Sales yard that began this afternoon.

At 12:19 p.m., firefighters responded to 51 Quarry St. on a report of a fire.

Upon arrival, firefighters located multiple cars in various stages of the scrap/recycling process that were burning in stacks, creating heavy flames and smoke.

To prevent heat exhaustion to firefighters, Chief Smith ordered a second alarm. Gloucester’s four engines, ladder and rescue car responded to the scene, and the previous shift was called back for duty for added manpower. Additional crews from Rockport, Manchester and Essex responded to the scene, while Beverly, Hamilton and Ipswich fire departments covered the Gloucester station.

Firefighters remain on scene putting out the fire, which has been contained to the junkyard. There is no danger of exposure to surrounding buildings or to the public. No injuries have been reported.

The fire will be investigated once fully extinguished. Firefighters on scene were given reports that workers were using a cutting torch shortly before the fire broke out.

This is breaking news. More information will be released as it becomes available.
