Chelmsford Police Receive Meritorious Awards for Outstanding Service
CHELMSFORD — Chief James Spinney is pleased to announce that six members of the Chelmsford Police Department received meritorious awards this week for their exemplary service to the community.
Chief Spinney presented the commendations during a ceremony on Wednesday, April 13.
Sgt. Jason Poor, Officer Dave Leo, Officer Chris Zaher and Officer Dave Mackenzie earned their awards for outstanding performance of duty during an incident involving an armed man who had barricaded himself in his house last year. After a three-hour standoff, and with assistance of the Northeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council’s SWAT Team, the subject surrendered without incident.
“Our responding officers did an outstanding job evacuating the neighborhood and securing a perimeter during this high-stress situation,” Chief Spinney said. “They handled the incident with professionalism and care and were ultimately able to resolve the matter with the man peacefully.”
Detective Becky Tyros and Detective George Tyros received meritorious awards for community service for their work with Chelmsford High School. Both support and provide information for the health department’s course on opioids.
The health and wellness course with the high school is focused on educating students about the dangers of opioid use and addiction. Over the last three years, the detectives have made regular presentations to classes on the nation’s current opioid epidemic.
“George and Becky have done a great job collaborating with the high school health department by sharing information concerning the trends in our nation, state and town,” Chief Spinney said. “They are an asset to this program and I thank them for continuously setting aside time to educate our students and answer questions.”
