Statements from Tyngsborough and Chelmsford Police Chiefs on Arrest of Man Who Placed Devices on Power Lines
TYNGSBOROUGH — Chief Richard D. Howe and Chelmsford Police Chief James M. Spinney issue the following statements on this morning’s arrest.
“We are grateful to the FBI and our neighbors for their hard and efficient work during this investigation,” Chief Howe said. “Through municipal, state and federal partnerships we were able to bring a swift resolution to this case.”
“This is a fine example of collaboration among all levels of law enforcement,” Chief Spinney said. “Our teamwork ensured that the public remained safe at all times.”
The following is a press release from the FBI:
This morning at approximately 7:35 a.m., the FBI, with the assistance of the Massachusetts State Police, Chelmsford Police Department, Tyngsboro Police Department and Army National Guard Civil Support Team, arrested Danny M. Kelly, 61, at his home located at 26 School Street, Chelmsford, Massachusetts.
Mr. Kelly was taken into custody without incident, following an investigation into the suspicious devices found on March 30, 2016 in Tyngsboro.
This past Wednesday, at approximately 3:00 p.m., the Tyngsboro Fire Department responded to a brush fire in the vicinity of 60 Locust Avenue.
Crews that responded to the scene noticed items that didn’t appear to be part of the transmission system and alerted National Grid. National Grid assessed the situation and alerted law enforcement.
Massachusetts State Police and FBI Special Agent Bomb technicians responded and identified multiple incendiary devices similar in structure to pipe bombs in the area. The devices were rendered safe.
The Tyngsboro Police and Fire Departments, along with the Massachusetts State Police, Massachusetts Department of Fire Services and ATF are assisting the FBI, which is leading the investigation.
At this time, the FBI believes there is no threat to public safety.
Due to the ongoing investigation, all further inquiries should be directed to the United States Attorney’s office in Massachusetts. No further information will be provided at this time.
