Burlington Police Department Partners with Nextdoor, the Private Social Network for Neighborhoods
Partnership Will Enable Officers to Communicate with Residents and Facilitate Virtual Neighborhood Watch
BURLINGTON — Chief Michael R. Kent reports that the Burlington Police Department is today announcing a partnership with Nextdoor (nextdoor.com), a private social network exclusively for neighborhoods, to build stronger, safer communities with the help of residents.
The partnership with Nextdoor will enable the Burlington Police Department to communicate online with Burlington neighborhoods to build stronger, safer communities. Residents and Police Department staff will be able to work together to improve safety and strengthen virtual neighborhood watch.
“We have always invested in innovative ways to increase safety for our residents,” said Chief Kent. “With Nextdoor, we can help empower neighbors to keep their communities safe and connected and give them the ability to collaborate on virtual neighborhood watch efforts.”
Nextdoor has proven to be an essential and well-adopted tool with more than 50 percent of neighborhoods using Nextdoor across the country.
With Nextdoor, Burlington residents can join private online communities for their neighborhoods to share information, including neighborhood public safety issues, community events and activities, local services, and even lost pets. The Police Department will be able to post information such as important news, services, programs, free events, and emergency notifications to Nextdoor communities within the town.
Nextdoor is free for residents and the Police Department. Each Burlington neighborhood has its own private Nextdoor community, accessible only to residents who verify that they live in the neighborhood. Neighborhoods establish and self-manage their own Nextdoor communities and the Police Department will not be able to access residents’ online communities, contact information, or content. Information shared on Nextdoor is password protected and cannot be accessed by search engines.
Those interested in joining their neighborhood’s Nextdoor neighborhood can visit www.nextdoor.com and enter their address. If residents have questions about their Nextdoor neighborhood, please visit help.nextdoor.com.
