Melrose Police Welcome New Officers

MELROSE — Chief Michael L. Lyle is pleased to announce that three officers joined the Melrose Police Department this summer and were sworn in at a ceremony yesterday.

Officers Marco DePalma, Travis Nally and Brian Trainor joined the department on Aug. 13 after graduating from the Reading Municipal Police Academy on Aug. 11. They are now in the process of completing an 8-week field training program before they’re assigned to a shift.

Officials swore in the three officers, along with Patrolmen John Goodhue and Nick MacIntosh, who joined the department in December, at a ceremony at Melrose City Hall.

“These five officers certainly come from a background that will support the department’s community policing efforts,” Chief Lyle said. “I look forward to seeing the three recent graduates acclimate to their new role and learn about our great city.”

Officer DePalma graduated from Bishop Fenwick High School in 2004 and attended Suffolk University, earning a bachelor’s degree in Sociology in 2008.

Prior to becoming a police officer in Melrose, he worked at the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office for four years and the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office for two years.

Officer Nally is a 2009 graduate of Malden High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice and Sociology from Westfield State University in 2013. He previously worked at a Department of Youth Services Detention Center.

Officer Trainor grew up in Melrose, attending St. Mary’s Elementary School and Malden Catholic High School. After graduating, he joined the United States Marine Corps where he was assigned to the 3rd Assault Amphibian Battalion at Camp Pendleton, Calif. and later deployed to the Al Anbar Province in Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

During a second deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Officer Trainor traveled to Guam, Hawaii, Saipan, Thailand, Singapore, Djibouti, Kuwait and Iraq with the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit.
