Burlington Police Officers Complete Senior Management Institute for Police Training

BURLINGTON — Police Chief Michael Kent is pleased to report that two members of the Burlington Police Department will have finished the Senior Management Institute for Police (SMIP) by the end of the week.

Capt. Gregory Skehan completed the 59th session, May 31-June 18, and Lt. Glen Mills will graduate from the 61st session on July 30, having begun the course on July 12.

“One of our goals is to continuously offer advanced training opportunities to all officers at the Burlington Police Department to expand their knowledge and skills while in the field,” Chief Kent said. “Capt. Skehan and Lt. Mills, as leaders of this department, have greatly benefited from this course and will be able to apply and share their skills with others.”

SMIP is a program of the Police Executive Research Forum — an independent research organization that focuses on critical issues in policing — that provides senior police executives with intensive training in the latest management concepts and practices used in business and government. Participants also engage in discussions about the top issues facing law enforcement today.

Police leave the course with a clear understanding of general management theory, policy development, planning processes and organizational behavior. Topics include:

  • Diversity
  • Political management
  • Organizational strategy
  • Performance management
  • Organizational change
  • Leadership
  • Managerial problem-solving
  • Career planning
  • Negotiation
  • Process analysis
  • Media relations
  • New policing strategies and innovations

The program requires extensive reading with classroom discussion. Participants are also encouraged to apply the concepts and issues presented to their own organizations. Because of the course’s intensity and daily group study, during the week, everyone is required to reside on the Boston University campus, where the classes are taught.
