Recovery Unplugged Joins The Gloucester Initiative
GLOUCESTER — Police Chief Leonard Campanello and Mayor Sefatia Romeo Theken are pleased to report that Recovery Unplugged, a Florida-based treatment center, has partnered with the Gloucester Police Department’s ANGEL Initiative.
As of today, 32 people have been placed into treatment programs through the ANGEL Initiative.
The Gloucester Initiative places those who are struggling with addiction into treatment centers rather than jail cells. Under the initiative, a person suffering from the disease of addiction can turn over their remaining drug supply and paraphernalia to the Gloucester Police Department without the threat of arrest. The policy went into effect earlier this month in an effort to address a growing opioid epidemic and to reduce the number of overdoses in Massachusetts. “We are so thankful for the amount of support we have received from treatment centers all over the country,” Chief Campanello said. “Without the help of centers like Recovery Unplugged, our mission to save lives would not be possible.”
“Adding a new partnership means we can save more precious lives than we could before,” Mayor Romeo Theken said. “We are grateful for centers like Recovery Unplugged and are looking forward to working with them.”
Chief Campanello and businessman John Rosenthal have launched The Police Assisted Addiction and Recovery Initiative (P.A.A.R.I.) — a new nonprofit organization created in response to Gloucester’s revolutionary drug addiction program and the immediate positive feedback from local, state and national organizations.
The Recovery Unplugged Treatment Program is a highly structured, multi-modal approach to therapy that uses music creation as a catalyst to break down barriers built throughout lives of addiction. However, it’s been developed for every addict, not just musicians. The program also recognizes that each person who turns to the program for help comes with a personal history and set of circumstances.
This is a new, state-of-the-art approach rooted in emotional communication that uses recovery triggers rather than relapse prevention protocols. The program’s founders say that this is the key to long lasting change and why their success rate is so much better than the national average. In addition to group therapy, medication management, individual counseling, psycho-educational groups, addictions education, step-work, coping skills and family therapy, clients use musical medicine to create an enduring aftercare element so critical to true recovery. Recovery Unplugged’s staff includes legendary singer/songwriter Richie Supa (Aerosmith, Bon Jovi) who is frequently joined by famous musicians in recovery themselves.
“Here at Recovery Unplugged, we believe we can make a difference by saving one life at a time,” said co-founder Paul Pellinger. “By partnering with the Gloucester Initiative, we make this goal much more of a reality.”
