Genesis House Joins Gloucester Initiative
30 People Placed in Treatment in 30 Days Since Gloucester Initiative Began June 1
GLOUCESTER — Police Chief Leonard Campanello and Mayor Sefatia Romeo Theken are pleased to report that Genesis House, located in Lake Worth, Fla, has partnered with the Gloucester Police Department’s ANGEL Initiative and is willing to take multiple participants this year, regardless of their insurance or financial situation.
“The continuous support we have received on this initiative never ceases to inspire me,” Chief Campanello said. “I am looking forward to the start of what I hope is a long relationship with Genesis House, and appreciate their willingness to open their doors to those who are in need.”
Genesis House has been in business for more than two decades and is located on five acres of land in Palm Beach County.
“Genesis House looks forward to joining forces with the Gloucester Police Department’s ANGEL Initiative to help those in need get their lives back,” said Genesis House CEO James Dodge. “We believe that everyone deserves a chance to overcome the disease of addiction.”
The Gloucester Initiative places those who are struggling with addiction into treatment centers rather than jail cells. Under this initiative, people who suffer from addiction can turn over their remaining drug supply and paraphernalia to the Gloucester Police Department without the threat of arrest. The policy went into effect earlier this month in an effort to address a growing opioid epidemic and to reduce the number of overdoses in Massachusetts. As of today, 30 people have been placed into treatment programs through the ANGEL Initiative.
“Partnering with Genesis House ensures we will be able to assist even more people with recovery,” Mayor Romeo Theken said. “Our community couldn’t be happier with the level of support we are receiving from treatment centers across the county.”
Given the immediate positive response from local, state and national organizations, Chief Campanello and businessman John Rosenthal launched The Police Assisted Addiction and Recovery Initiative (P.A.A.R.I.) — a new nonprofit organization created in response to Gloucester’s revolutionary drug addiction program.
