ARLINGTON — Police Chief Frederick Ryan reports that the Arlington Police Department responded late Friday evening to a report of two men shot in a motor vehicle, and that police officers acted quickly to locate and arrest the two men suspected in the shooting.
“This was a dangerous situation, but as a result of quick thinking by police officers, two violent suspects were immediately located and taken into custody,” Chief Ryan said. “I wish to commend our officers and our partners in the Cambridge Police Department for their diligent work Friday evening.”
Arlington Police responded shortly after 10 p.m. to the intersection of Lake Street and Massachusetts Avenue, where they found two men in a Chevrolet sedan. Both men had been shot at least once.
Police determined that the victims had been attacked near Thorndike Field, a park approximately one half mile away.
Officers responded, and Arlington Police Sergeant Robert Pedrini used the Boston Area Police Emergency Radio Network to alert neighboring police departments to the incident, with a description of a suspect.
Cambridge police quickly located the first suspect near the Alewife MBTA Station. Police found a handgun magazine in his pocket, and a handgun was located nearby by police officers.
PETER HARRIS, AGE 37, whose last known address is a homeless shelter in Boston, was arrested and charged with Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon, Armed Assault with Intent to Murder, and firearms offenses.
Back at Thorndike Field, officers located a second suspect in the shooting. The man told police that he had been struck by a car and was injured. A preliminary investigation indicates that he had been hit by the victims’ vehicle as they attempted to flee the attack.
The second suspect, STEPHEN MEYER, AGE 60, whose last known address is a homeless shelter in Boston, was treated and released from a Boston-area hospital for non-life threatening injuries. He was arrested and charged with Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon and Armed Assault with Intent to Murder. MEYER also has multiple felony arrest warrants and will be held on those as well.
Additional felony charges may be filed against both men as the investigation continues. The incident remains under investigation by the Arlington Police Department.
The victims, two men, ages 18 and 21, were taken to Boston-area hospitals with serious injuries. Their names are not being released at this time.
The suspects were held at the Arlington Police Department pending arraignment Monday in Cambridge District Court.
These are allegations. All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty.
