Maynard Firefighters Battle 2-Alarm Fire in -9 Degree Temperatures
MAYNARD — Fire Chief Anthony Stowers reports that the Maynard Fire Department battled a 2-alarm building fire in a 6-unit apartment building early Thursday morning.
The Fire Department responded to Apple Ridge Road at 7:11 a.m. and arrived within two minutes with smoke showing. The fire, which appeared to start in the basement, traveled up to the first and second floor and did some minor damage to the third floor as well.
The first arriving firefighters attacked the basement directly, as the second arriving fire companies went to the first and second floor to check for further fire or hot spots.
The fire, which grew to a second alarm response, was under control at 7:48.
The Maynard Fire Department received mutual aid assistance from fire crews from Stow, Acton, Sudbury and Concord. The Maynard Police Department assisted with traffic and with locating fire hydrants for fire personnel.
Fire investigators from Maynard, Concord, and the State Fire Marshal’s Office are investigating to determine the case.
An aggressive effort contained the fire to one unit, and residents of the other five units were allowed to return home.
“Firefighters dealt with extremely adverse conditions with the temperature at -9 degrees upon arrival and a water supply that was hampered because of the cold conditions and snow build-up in the area,” Chief Stowers said. “Under the conditions, our firefighters did a tremendous job saving the rest of the dwellings from destruction.”
One firefighter was injured when he fell on ice that had accumulated in the parking lot. No residents were injured.
