Statement of Merrimac, West Newbury, and Groveland Police Departments

Note: Some media outlets have inquired this weekend about this report.

MERRIMAC — Municipal police, working with State Police detectives assigned to the Essex County District Attorney’s Office, are investigating the Friday evening death of a juvenile male.

Foul play is not suspected.

West Newbury Police Chief Lisa Holmes and Groveland Police Chief Robert Kirmelewicz report that two juveniles were the subjects of a reported medical emergency early Friday evening, in Groveland, near the West Newbury line.

Groveland Police and Fire responded and were assisted by West Newbury Police and Fire at about 5 p.m. Friday for a report of a juvenile male in need of medical assistance. Responders found the first boy and transported him to an area hospital. He was later taken home by his parents.

There was also a report of a second juvenile, who could not be located initially. Municipal police, out of concern for his health and well-being, reached out to the Massachusetts State Police and other agencies, which provided search and rescue assets, including the State Police Air Wing. That juvenile was later found and did not require medical attention.

Merrimac Police Chief Eric M. Shears then reports that, at approximately, 10:30 pm, officers responded to the first juvenile’s home in Merrimac for a report of a serious injury. The juvenile was transported to Anna Jacques Hospital in Newburyport, where he was pronounced dead.

Merrimac Police are working with the Essex District Attorney’s Office, which investigates all unattended deaths as mandated by law.

Foul play is not suspected, and the victim’s name will not be released because of his age.

Chief Shears asks that members of the public and media respect the privacy of the victim’s family.

Any inquiries about the investigation should be directed to the District Attorney’s Office.
