Wakefield Police Arrest Man for Breaking into Storage Lockers
15 Counts for Waltham Man
More than 5 Dozen Items Recovered
WAKEFIELD — Police Chief Rick Smith announces that a Waltham man was arrested early this morning and charged with breaking into storage containers and units, stealing dozens of items.
Police were called to an address on New Salem Street shortly before 3 a.m. for a report of a suspicious person driving a sedan through an industrial lot without headlights.
Officers arrived one minute later and quickly located a man, drenched in sweat, wearing black globes, a dark hooded sweatshirt, and a bandanna, struggling with a metal storage unit.
Police detained and questioned the man, who was driving a green Mercury Marquis, with a license plate that belonged on a Ford Ecoline van. Police observed numerous power tools, in plain view, in the front and back seat. After questioning the suspect, the officers arrested DAVID FLORIO, age 39, of WALTHAM.
An investigation revealed that FLORIO allegedly broke into 10 storage containers. FLORIO has been charged with:
- Breaking into a depository, a felony, 10 counts
- Possession of a burglarious instrument, a felony
- Vandalism/defacement of property, a felony
- Receiving stolen property, a misdemeanor
- Taking and carrying away a registration (Ford Van License plate), a misdemeanor
The case remains under investigation by Wakefield Police Detectives, and additional charges could be forthcoming.
“Businesses and contractors who work and keep their goods in Wakefield should not have to worry about coming to work in the morning and finding their tools and supplies missing,” Chief Smith said. “This is an example of good police work leading to a quick arrest.”
Police found several power tools, a concrete saw, copper pipe, sheet metal, bolt cutters, assorted jewelry, road paving equipment, a police scanner, and dozens of other items in FLORIO’S vehicle.
FLORIO was also taken into custody on an outstanding warrant out of Newton District Court.
FLORIO was held without bail at Wakefield Police Department pending arraignment at Malden District Court. Any additional questions should be referred to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office.
All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty.
