**Media Advisory** Wakefield Police to Host Opioid/Narcotic Awareness Forum

WHEN:          Tuesday, April 8, 2014
7 p.m.

WHERE:       Wakefield Public Safety Building
1 Union St.
Wakefield, MA 01880

WHO:

  • Wakefield Police Department Officials
  • WAKEUP – Wakefield Unified Prevention Alliance

WHAT:

The Wakefield Police Department in cooperation with WAKEUP, the Wakefield Unified Prevention Alliance will be hosting an Opioid Awareness forum. As recent media reports have indicated, our communities are besieged by overdoses from opioid compounds, including heroin.  Many of these overdoses are fatal.  The public health crisis is gripping our neighborhoods, costing lives, loss of productivity and serious deep rooted psychological issues each and every day.

In fact, just last week, Governor Patrick declared the opioid problem a Public Heath Crisis.

“Opioid addiction is a serious crisis and it has a profound effect on communities, including Wakefield. The Wakefield Police Department is committed to not just rooting out the illegal opioid trade, but also to raising awareness about the damage that drugs like heroin can do to a person, a family, and a community as a whole,” said Wakefield Police Chief Rick Smith. “I am proud to partner with the Wakefield Unified Prevention Alliance on this vital awareness forum.”

Presenters at the forum will include prevention experts, a former addict, school personnel, emergency department staff, police and the judiciary.

Please join WAKEUP and the Wakefield Police Department for this informative forum on Tuesday April 8 at 700 PM.

Seating is limited to the first 50 people. To signup, contact Catherine Dhingra at 339-219-4034.
