Chelmsford Police Respond after Vehicle Crashes into Building
CHELMSFORD — Chief James M. Spinney reports that the Chelmsford Police Department is investigating after a motor vehicle crashed into a building this evening.
Chelmsford Police and Fire responded to 22 Middlesex St. at 5:20 p.m. after receiving numerous 911 calls. Upon arrival, rescuers found that a brown 2002 Toyota Tacoma light pickup truck had crashed into the building, which houses a dentist’s office and an insurance company. The truck was more than 3/4 lodged inside the building.
The operator and lone occupant of the pickup truck, an 83-year-old Lowell man, was trapped inside the truck. Firefighters and police officers worked diligently to free the driver. He was transported to a landing zone on Graniteville Road and was flown by medical helicopter to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center with serious, life-threatening injuries.
The building was occupied at the time, but no one was injured inside.
The Chelmsford building inspector is assessing damage.
A preliminary investigation indicates that the Tacoma was traveling on Wright Street when the vehicle crossed Middlesex Street and struck the building.
The incident is under investigation by the Chelmsford Police Department.
