Lawrence Police Arrest Man on Gun Charges
LAWRENCE — Chief James Fitzpatrick reports that the Lawrence Police Department arrested a man Wednesday on gun and weapon charges.
MATTHEW JAKE CAMACHO, 40, of SALEM, N.H. was arrested on the following charges:
- Carrying a Firearm Without a License
- Possession of a Dangerous Weapon
On Wednesday, May 17, at approximately 4:50 p.m., an officer was dispatched to West Street for a report of two men who appeared to be under the influence of a controlled substance. Upon their arrival, after a brief conversation, one of the men began walking up West Street toward CAMACHO and appeared to engage in a hand-to-hand transaction with him, though no drugs were found.
CAMACHO did have a knife in his possession, which officers found after searching his person. After he was taken into custody, officers searched CAMACHO’s car and discovered a black handgun and eight blank rounds of ammunition.
“I commend the professionalism our officers displayed during this situation, which resulted in an illegal gun being taken off of our streets,” Chief Fitzpatrick said. “The Lawrence Police Department remains committed to continuing our efforts to keep guns out of the hands of criminals.”
