MAYNARD — Police Chief Mark W. Dubois reports that the Maynard Police Department, Maynard Fire Department, and Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad respond to a residential neighborhood on Saturday morning after a homeowner reported finding a suspicious device near their home.
Officials respond to the area of 6 Walcott St. in Maynard at around 11 a.m. Saturday. Upon arrival and after an assessment, Maynard Police decided to request the assistance of the Bomb Squad.
The bomb squad determined that the device was not explosive in nature. The bomb squad rendered the device safe. Officials do not believe there was any kind of detonation mechanism, and the incident is being investigated as a possible hoax device.
The incident is being investigated by the Maynard Police and State Police assigned to the Office of the State Fire Marshal.
Anyone with information about this incident or the device left in the neighborhood is asked to call the Maynard Police Department at 978-897-1011; or the Maynard Police Department Anonymous Tip line at 978-897-0563 or the Massachusetts Arson Hotline at 1-800-682-9229. All calls may be confidential. The Arson Hotline is part of the Arson Watch Reward Program which provides rewards of UP TO $5,000 for information that helps to solve the case. The program is funded by the property and casualty insurance underwriting companies of Massachusetts.
